Book a travel clinic appointment

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in rural and farming areas of Asia. Most infections cause no symptoms, but a small number cause serious inflammation of the brain. The risk is highest for longer stays in rural areas during the rainy season.

The vaccine

Two injections, usually twenty-eight days apart. A rapid schedule of two doses a week apart is available for adults who are travelling sooner. A booster after one to two years extends protection.

When to have it

Start at least five weeks before you travel for the standard course.

Side effects

A sore arm, headache or muscle aches for a day or two are common.

Your pharmacist will confirm at your consultation whether this vaccine is recommended for your trip.
