Protection against hepatitis B, a liver infection spread through blood and body fluids.

Book a travel clinic appointment

Hepatitis B is a virus carried in blood and body fluids. Travellers can be exposed through medical or dental treatment abroad, tattoos or piercings, sexual contact, or accidents. It is common in many parts of Africa, Asia and South America.

The vaccine

The standard course is three injections over six months. If you are travelling sooner, an accelerated course of three doses over three weeks, with a booster at twelve months, gives protection in time.

When to have it

Start as early as you can. The accelerated course needs three weeks before you leave.

Side effects

A sore arm is the most common. Tiredness or a mild temperature can follow and settles within a day or two.

Your pharmacist will confirm at your consultation whether this vaccine is recommended for your trip.
